The context
Kenya has more than 60 national parks and nature reserves, covering tens of thousands of square kilometres. These areas are home to a number of species (elephants, rhinos, etc.) threatened by poaching.
The project
In 2013, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) issued an invitation to tender for the design, supply and installation of a private radio communication system and associated solar power supply for five national parks. The aim was to improve coordination of the ranger teams as they monitored the parks and sought to combat poaching.
Financed by a concessional loan from the French Treasury to the Kenyan government, Ellipse Projects was responsible for installing the radio infrastructure and deploying 800 portable and mobile terminals in five national parks: Nairobi, Amboseli, Nakuru, Tsavo West and Tsavo East.
Deployment was completed in June 2017.
The benefits
The infrastructure delivered by Ellipse Projects is helping to protect Kenya’s biodiversity and to ensure the safety of park rangers and tourists. Meanwhile, the use of solar energy has significantly reduced the project’s carbon footprint.
