Building a regional hospital in Koforidua (in progress)

The context

Ghana faces a number of significant public health challenges, including access to healthcare, disease prevention, resilience to epidemics, and recruitment of healthcare staff. The fears raised by the coronavirus pandemic, in particular, has prompted the government to build several new health facilities across the country.

The project

Ghana opted for the construction of a hospital with 285 beds (extendable to 600 beds in a second phase) in the eastern region. The facility will offer a range of medical services and equipment, as well as a training centre and accommodation for staff.

The hospital is being designed and built by Ellipse Projects in a joint venture with Tyllium. The financing is being provided by Standard Chartered and UK Export Finance (UKEF).

The benefits

The Koforidua hospital will make a number of essential medical services available to local people, including an emergency department, operating theatre, maternity, consultation, intensive care, paediatric surgery and gynaecology.
